Safety is a prerequisite for trust. I created these “5 Golden Rules of Spotting” in acroyoga. I hope you find them useful.
1. Be close
Keep your centre of gravity close to the base and flyer. Bend your knees as much as needed and stay a bit low so you’re ready to catch.
2. Be attentive
Stay focused even if everything looks stable and safe. A fall sometimes happens in only a split second. Be ready.
3. Be honest
It’s okay to say “I don’t know how to spot this.” Ask for an explanation for the spotting technique. Or get somebody else to spot.
4. Be supportive
Encourage the base and the flyer. Tell them if they’re doing good. It might even cause the flyer to relax more and in turn make it easier for the base to balance.
5. Be big enough
Never agree to spot if the flyer is much bigger than yourself. You should be able to carry the weight of the flyer. You can be more than one spotter. But make sure you know what you are doing and who’s responsible for what.
